            This has turned out to be a bigger mess than I anticipated. Alpine packages an older LTS version of Node 8.x, which has a bug preventing in-place upgrades of npm.

            How fun.

            Taking the 64 bit binaries straight from the nodejs distribution site doesn't work either, because those are linked against a libc and ld which doesn't exist in Alpine.
