NullPointerException at hudson.scm.ChangeLogSet$Entry.getMsgAnnotated(ChangeLogSet.java:173)

      Found the following errors in Jenkins log:

          What StarTeam version is used?
          Is this happening on master?

          Our setup is very simple: we have single Jenkins instance (no slaves). We use StarTeam 2009 client (server is the same 2009 version). As for StarTeam plugin for Jenkins I believe it is the latest from the plugin center.

          As for error it seems like it started manifesting itself when we upgraded from 1.395 to 1.397, after that each new Jenkins version didn't change behavior (error persists).

          Do you need other information?

          I have very limited time and resources for StarTeam plugin maintenance. Please excuse slow responses.

          How do you commit to StarTeam ? do you use standalone client, Eclipse plugin or command line client?

          Also can you verify changelog.xml files in your setup under the jobs/build directory?
          Each build should have one.
          The should look like:

          <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
          <changelog>
                  <entry>
                          <fileName>aFile</fileName>
                          <revisionNumber>3</revisionNumber>
                          <date>2011-03-16 20:14:05</date>

                  </entry>
          </changelog>

          My suspicion is that changelog files were somehow corrupted.

          How are you attempting to view StarTeam changes?
          What are the steps from a job status page?

          Hi Jan!

          Our StarTeam plugin version is 0.6.3.

          As for contents of the changelog.xml files here one from the last build:

          <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
          <changelog>
          	<entry>
          		<fileName>AbstractExecutor.java</fileName>
          		<revisionNumber>6</revisionNumber>
          		<date>2011-03-16 10:09:09</date>
          		<message>remotemethods exception handling refactoring</message>
          		<user>user</user>
          		<changeType>change</changeType>
          	</entry>
          </changelog>

          Commits to StarTeam are done using StarTeam client outside of Eclipse.

          As for viewing changes I refer to the {{/jenkins/job/

          {job-name}/{build-number}/}} page which has "Summary Of Changes" and {{/jenkins/job/{job-name}

          /

          {build-number}

          /Changes}} page which list all changes that were detected when build was running.

          I've found another issue with the changelog file creation - entry that is written in <fileName> element is not escaped. Which leads to the situation when changelog.xml can be created but not parsed. This happens if file name contains special character like &, for example:

          <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
          <changelog>
                  <entry>
                          <fileName>A & B.pdf</fileName>
                          <revisionNumber>3</revisionNumber>
                          <date>2011-03-16 20:14:05</date>
                          <message>a message</message>
                          <user>JRuzicka</user>
                          <changeType>added</changeType>
                  </entry>
          </changelog>

          Please find a patch in the attachment which also escapes file name so the result will be:

          <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
          <changelog>
                  <entry>
                          <fileName>A &amp; B.pdf</fileName>
                          <revisionNumber>3</revisionNumber>
                          <date>2011-03-16 20:14:05</date>
                          <message>a message</message>

                  </entry>
          </changelog>

          As for original problem I still cannot find what is wrong. Perhaps I need some debug version of Jenkins itself?

          Ok, I think I found it and it seems to be Jenkins bug and not StarTeam plugin bug.

          The thing is that ChangeLogSet$Entry#getMsgAnnotated() fails at line 173. Here is code snippet from this method.

          ChangeLogSet$Entry.java
                /**
                 * Gets the text fully marked up by {@link ChangeLogAnnotator}.
                 */
                  public String getMsgAnnotated() {
                      MarkupText markup = new MarkupText(getMsg());
                      for (ChangeLogAnnotator a : ChangeLogAnnotator.all())
                          a.annotate(parent.build,this,markup);
                      return markup.toString(false);
                  }

          The line on which error occurs is

          a.annotate(parent.build,this,markup);

          and as far I can tell it happens because

          parent == null

          !!!

          Dmitry Vyazelenko added a comment - - edited Ok, I think I found it and it seems to be Jenkins bug and not StarTeam plugin bug. The thing is that ChangeLogSet$Entry#getMsgAnnotated() fails at line 173. Here is code snippet from this method. ChangeLogSet$Entry.java /** * Gets the text fully marked up by {@link ChangeLogAnnotator}. */ public String getMsgAnnotated() { MarkupText markup = new MarkupText(getMsg()); for (ChangeLogAnnotator a : ChangeLogAnnotator.all()) a.annotate(parent.build, this ,markup); return markup.toString( false ); } The line on which error occurs is a.annotate(parent.build, this ,markup); and as far I can tell it happens because parent == null !!!

          Hi Jan,

          I've found the cause of the problem => why parent is null on ChangeLogEntry. It is simply, because it was never assigned. The attached patch StarTeamChangeLogParser.java.diff fixes the issue and also provides some additional information if parsing fails (e.g. file path, some date/time parsing enhancements etc).

          So I think you can close this issue now!

          Thanks for help & collaboration

          Latest version of the StarTeam plugin 0.6.6 has the same problem!

          Need to rollback to local build instead.

          Sorry for that ... I was trying to release changes that already placed in the repository, before folding in new changes.
