The groovy-html.template generates invalid HTML when there is an exception in the maven build artifacts. In this case, you get a <TABLE width="100%"><TR><TD class="bg1"><B>BUILD ATRIFACTS</B></TD></TR> and then the try/catch block comes into play. Something else appears to be messed up if you look at the HTML. If there is a debug flag to dump the HTML, I'd be glad to provide it as an attachment for clarification.
