Cannot modify background image

It appears that the suggested example .css does not work. I am able to get my .css to override fonts but not the background image. It looks like the webpage specifies the background url in the element and not in the .css which overrides the simple theme .css url for background image. Unless I am seeing something wrong, perhaps your example could show other things instead of a modification of the background image.
