Git auto-install not usable with Git for Windows 2.x

    • Git for WIndows 2.26.0

The (otherwise fantastic) auto-install feature can't really be used anymore since git-scm.org does not offer client downloads in zip format anymore. Currently even the portable installers are delivered as 7z.exe => see git-scm.org.

It would be great to be able to auto download, install and use the git client for windows again.

NB: the functionality appears to work great for the cmake build plugin - potentially this code can be reused?

[JENKINS-33850] Git auto-install not usable with Git for Windows 2.x

You can find ZIPped binary distribution on github: https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/releases/

Mark Waite added a comment -

Zip files for MinGit are provided (as noted in the comment) on github.com.

PortableGit can be downloaded as a self-extracting archive and then used to create a local zip file as well.

Git for Windows is apparently not usable in that way, since PortableGit specifically exists so that the MSI installer is not required to install and configure it.
