From my understanding there's a new deployment set of APIs under the umbrella of 'Azure Resource Manager' which is now preferable over the 'classic' Windows Management APIs or whatever Azure formerly preferred.

The consequence of using these old APIs is that resources created are hidden away in "Virtual Machines (classic)" in the portal and certain instance types are not available
