        abayer I might take a look at the nodejs plugin to fix the same issue as soon as you published this fix here, so I can see what it takes...

        That one's gonna be a lot simpler - Custom Tools is...weird. I think it doesn't actually install anything without the wrapper? It confused me.

        Yeah, nodejs is simpler - see https://github.com/jenkinsci/jenkins/blob/master/core/src/main/java/hudson/tasks/Maven.java#L487 for something that definitely works.
