Sometimes the GCal build notification plugin fals to authenticate the user and
cannot update the Google Calendar. If the build had been a success up to this
point, it will now fail. It would be nice if there were an option to ignore
      failures in the GCal plugin.

      GCal: Preparing calendar update request...
ERROR: GCal: Could not authenticate user [redacted] to calendar [redacted]
      Email was triggered for: Failure

[JENKINS-4335] If calendar update fails, build should not fail

I would suggest that the actual calendar updates are just queued by the job and then taken care of by a background process in hudson that does several retries, further and further apart before giving up with a message in the error log.
