Failure of docker build command does not fail build step

      I have a Jenkins project with several "Docker build and publish" steps, each of which depends on images produced by those that came before it. However, when "docker build" exits with an error in a step, the Jenkins job simply proceeds to the next step as if the build step succeeded.
