There should be a wait time that the plugin should before assuming the node is ready. The startup script might take a while to run, and the jenkins slave.jar will go ahead anyway without waiting for it to complete, and the subsequent steps will fail. This is happening for me where I have dependencies that are installed in the boot script.

The "Launch Timeout" field is an upper, not lower, limit.
