If a node fails to launch, you can obtain additional information on the web UI. Typically found on jenkins/computer/nodeName.

If you head there, you can find a link text with "See the log for more details." To access the logs, you need Overall/Administer permissions, but this link is shown to all users, even if they have no permission at all, which causes some confusion.
